What to Expect from Counselling: A Gentle Guide to Your First Session

Taking the first step into counselling can feel daunting. Many people worry about what the first session will be like, what they are expected to say, or whether they will feel comfortable opening up. These feelings are completely normal. My hope is that by sharing a little about what to expect, you will feel reassured and a little more at ease about beginning the process.

Before the first session

I usually begin with a free 20-minute consultation over the phone. This gives us a chance to talk through what you are looking for, answer any initial questions, and see whether working together feels right for you. If you decide to go ahead, we will arrange a time for your first counselling session. Sessions can take place face-to-face in my private counselling room in Bolton, or online or by telephone if that feels more accessible.

Beginning together

In the first session, I will take a little time to go through the counselling agreement with you. This covers practical things like confidentiality, session length, and how we work together. You will have space to ask any questions, and I will reassure you that this is a safe and private space where you can share whatever feels important.

What happens next

Once we have covered the practicalities, I will invite you to share what has brought you to counselling. There is no expectation to go into detail straight away; many people prefer to start gently, and the session often passes more quickly than you expect. The first meeting is very much a starting point, and we can go deeper into your story at a pace that feels right for you.

As a person-centred counsellor, I will not set the agenda or push you to talk about anything before you are ready. Instead, I follow your lead. Some clients find it helpful to set goals, while others prefer to simply see where the process takes them. The space is yours to use in the way that feels most helpful.

How counselling feels

My role is to provide a calm, non-judgmental space where you feel heard and understood. I listen carefully, reflect back what I hear, and act as a mirror so you may begin to see your experiences in new ways. For many clients, this gentle process of being truly heard can bring relief, clarity, and a greater sense of self-understanding.

Moving forward

It is natural to leave the first session with mixed feelings, perhaps a sense of relief, but also curiosity about what comes next. Counselling is a process that unfolds over time, and each step can help you to connect more deeply with yourself.

If you are considering counselling, you are warmly invited to get in touch. I offer a free 20-minute consultation so that we can talk about what you are looking for and see if counselling feels like the right support for you.
